Grinding and Cutting |
|
|
In order to choose the right wheel material
and structure several question must be asked :
- Type of use:cutting, grinding or polishing.
- Type of article to be ground and material:Nickle alloy blade, metal cylinder etc.
- Type of abrasive grain needed:Aluminum oxide, boron nitride etc.
- Type of specific physical property:porous, compacted etc.
- Type of bonding:verified,resin etc.
- Type of fabrication process:Cold or hot press etc.
The following recommendations are a summary of the most important precautions for
the use of abrasive wheels. Operators must adhere strictly to the safety procedurs
provided in machine instructions and to standards specified by law.

DO :
- Always wear protective clothing, safety glasses or a face shield, and a dust mask
or respirator when grinding and cutting.
- Always handle and store wheels in a careful manner, and inspect them thoroughly for
cracks or chips bofore using.
- Always ensure machine operating speed does not exceed the wheel speed.
- Always check mounting flanges for equal and correct diameter.
- Always use mounting blotters, when supplied with wheels.
- Always ensure that work rest is properly adjusted.
- Always use a safety guard that covers at least 1/2 of the grinding or cutt-off wheel.
- Always allow newly mounted wheel to run at operating speed, with guard in place,
for one full minute bofore using.
- Always turn off coolant bofore stopping wheel,to avoid creating an out-of-balance
condition.
- Always follow common sense safety pratices.
DON'T :
- Don't use a wheel that has been dropped cracked or chipped.
- Don't force a wheel onto the machine or alter the size of the arbor hole.
- Don't exceed maximum operating speed establised for the wheel.
- Don't use mounting flanges that are warped, nicked or sprung.
- Don't grind on the side of the wheel, unless the wheel is specifically designed for
that purpose.
- Don't start the machine until the wheel when grinder is started.
- Don't stand directly in front of a grinding wheel when grinder is started.
- Don't grind material for which the wheel is not designed.
- Don't tighten the mounting nut excessively.
